As part of its upcoming overhaul, Sony is planning to revamp and relaunch its Connect digital music service (DMS). Details are sketchy, though the addition of video is most likely. Sony Connect has struggled in the DMS market, having launched with limited catalogue, no support for MP3, a determination to persue its own ATRAC-3 format and a software package that is both very large and buggy. Recent changes to bring in MP3 support, a tidy integration with its own hardware and a strong range of flash and hard disk-based players has improved its fortunes but there’s a large amount of ground to be made up on the big DMS names. It’s made a good start though by bringing the development of the Connect software and Walkman hardware under the same management.
