A Nielsen SoundScan survey of US downloads has found that the volume of legal downloads has almost tripled to 150 million downloads from 55 million in the equivalent period in 2004. The survey would suggest that the gradual shift from illegal peer-to-peer (P2P) services could be underway though P2P figures have show a slight rise in most recent findings from BigChampagne. Single digital downloads represent 6% of music sales, again up from 2% a year previously.

Overall, US music sales dropped by 2.5% with the biggest hit coming in albums sales.
