BBC Radio 3 has announced the final figure for the Beethoven Experience downloads and it’s a staggering 1.4 million spread across two months and nine symphonies. Despite initially welcoming the BBC’s download trial, the classical music labels have been shocked by the take-up of the free, full-length downloads and have been more aggressive, claiming that the trial has damaged classical sales instead of creating greater awareness and potential knock-on sales. BBC Radio 3 are planning further ‘experiences’ but downloads are unlikely to feature in those.

Disclaimer: I work for the BBC in Radio & Music Interactive and worked on the download trial.
