Steve Jobs wasn’t kidding when he thought that the Japanese iTunes store would be a success – how about 1 million downloads in just four days. “iTunes has become Japan’s number one online music store in just four days,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “iTunes has sold twice as many songs in just four days as all the other online music services in Japan sell in one month.”

Apple’s press release has more detail including the Japanese language podcasts available. The Japanese music market is the world’s second biggest.

Wired notes that despite the success, there’s a bit of work to be done with major labels and artists missing from the roster.
