Nielsen Soundscan is answering the call for worldwide data on digital music downloads with an international tracking service. It will cover Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland, in addition to the US, Canada, and the UK. Data will be mined from iTunes and OD2/LoudEye amongst others – 120 stores in total.

It will be a welcome service as hard data is hard to come by with many companies not releasing country-specific information or not releasing data at all. Mind you unless you’re Apple, perhaps you wouldn’t want to reveal your stats at the moment considering the money being invested/spent on digital music services.
