Yahoo! is planning a price rise for its subscription digital music service for portable devices from $6.99 per month to $12 (or $10 if you subscribe for a year). When launched as a beta, the company proposed that it would eventually lift its price point but having moved out of beta and not raised its prices, it was thought it might stick there in an effort to draw more subscribers (Yahoo hasn’t released any figures yet). Even at $12, Yahoo Music Unlimited is still cheaper than immediate competitors Napster and Rhapsody. There’s been no change to the subscription price for computer users only.

A UK launch has been hinted at for January of this year and the price rise only makes that more likely as a ‘mature’ price point would be a more logical place to start in the UK.
