BBC Radio 3 won’t be repeating its hugely successful Beethoven downloading experience as part of a similar event based around the work of Bach. There were 1.4 million download requests (not downloads) across the master’s nine symphonies, which were made available in two periods across a month. The recordings were by the BBC Symphony Orchestra and were recorded by the BBC and as the rights situation was simplified (i.e. Beethoven is dead – still) the corporation was able to offer the music in its entirity for free. However, music labels and the industry bodies have raised hell since then and so there might be some Bach downloads, no information from the Beeb yet, but certainly nothing on that scale. Shame really.
