The BPI has doom and gloom in one hand and sunshine and joy in the other with forecasts that the lift in digital audio player sales will be reflected in digital music downloads. It’s forecasting that weekly downloads could pass one million in the run up to Christmas. The range of music being downloaded is expanding as well with 108,000 different tracks downloaded in the last week of November – double that in the previous year.

Digital downloads have reinvigorated the singles market in the UK with seven out of 10 being bought in bits and bytes. Sales in 2005 are up more than 400% year on year, 23.7 million in the first 49 weeks of the year. Oh, and iTunes accounts for one third of all UK single sales …
