Digital music exploded in 2005, by more than 250% (267% to be exact) to 192 million Euros over 2004 according to Jupiter Research. Leader of the pack was the UK with 57.9 million Euros, based on higher prices and subscriptions. And a change is gonna come, says Jupiter. Apple’s pay per download is dominant with 65% market share but “…subscriptions are an inevitability for Apple, rather than an if”. A la carte may be the shopping model of choice at the moment but subscriptions are growing – Wippit has just passed 200,000 subs. Napster, HMV and Virgin Digital are also in the mix, but interestingly the majority of Wippit’s downloads were in MP3.
