Weighty classicial tome Gramophone has issued new research demonstrating that classical music fan are just as digital savvy as their more populist music-loving fellows. More than one third of classical fans are embracing digital music players, digital downloads, digital radio, streaming online, internet radio and more than half are ripping their CDs to digital as well.

One in five classical listeners leggaly download music, the same proportion that actively use DMPs producing an average of 12 downloads per person demonstrating that classical listeners are active buyers in the digital arena as well as the physical.

Majors such as iTunes offers a reasonable classical catalogue while the genre has been boosted by the recent UK launch of eMusic, which offers recordings from Naxos, LSO Live, Ondine, BIS, Vanguard and ASV to name a few. eMusic’s catalogue of course is in MP3 format as well.
