UK ‘singles’ chart will never be the same now that the Official Charts Company has changed the rules so that downloads alone can count towards a position. Thanks to the pick and mix nature of digital downloads, we could soon see all manner of goodies returning to the top 10. Album tracks, one-offs, old favourites bought because they were featured in a TV programme, it’s all up for grabs.

For example, Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas was selling like the prverbial hot cakes before Christmas and would have charted well as it steadily maintained a number two selling spot in iTunes own top sellers chart. More interestingly, indie releases and unsigned acts could well grab themselves a chart spot if the marketing (and of course sales) are done just right.

So, just 20 months after they were first introduced into the reckoning, digital downloads are about to take centre stage.
