As the time for the major music labels and iTunes to renew licensing talks approaches, news reports are circulating that the labels will press iTunes to adopt a subscription model. It could well prove a win-win situation for iTunes, as it would sweeten relationships with the labels, increase revenues for the service, cement AAC with Fairplay as the leading DRM solution and make the iPhone and even more exciting prospect.

However, there is still no real pressure on iTunes to have to move to subscription. I think it would be great as having tried subscription it’s a great way to enjoy music. It would also, at a stroke, kill off another swathe of would-be competitors.
