It’s been a long time coming but online retailer Amazon is rolling out its digital music service this May. Talks with eMusic came and went and the word is that Amazon will integrate music sales into the context of artists rather than a standalone store a la iTunes etc. But it gets better as Amazon is planning to follow the MP3 route, so sidestepping the compatibility issues that could have impacted its hardware sales.

Interestingly, it’s unclear what deals have been done. Rumours abound that Universal Music is onboard, which seems hard to believe given the company’s public pronouncements. Insiders have stated that whichever directions talks go in, Amazon isn’t waiting to roll out its store – at last…
