Here’s an interesting take on the breakdown in talks between the Universal Music Group (UM) and Apple over iTunes’ label relations. Register columnist Steve Gordan ponders whether UMG
is playing for an iPod royalty as it got from Microsoft for the Zune (c’mon you remember the Zune).

UMG is inside its bubble and believes it’s only one or maybe two steps from ruling the world, which in terms of music may not be too far from the truth, but out in the real world Apple’ used to playing with the big boys and threatening to throw your toys out the pram usually only ends up with toys spread around your pram. Can UMG afford to live without iTunes? Of course not, so why bother pretending…especially when one’s just announced profits going the wrong way and another going in the right direction.
