Sony is attempting to challenge the digital music status quo with a pan-European deal offering purchasers of its new Walkman three months music via subscription for free.

Across five countries with HMV (UK), FNAC Music (France), Musicload (Germany), Terra Pixbox (Spain) and Planet Music (Holland), it’ll be a tempting offer especially given the new Walkman’s excellent video capabilities and the design of the player itself. But, it’s still tied to DRM (Windows) and so fundamentally is flawed.

Even if it only converts a few more folks to subscription as a consumption model, then it’ll be a good thing for everyone. Apple and iTunes won’t be too worried though.
