Check out this fascinating and simple overview of the music business’ lie of the land according to the master singer/songwriter David Byrne with his six models of distribution. It all makes perfect sense and for me clearly shows where and how record labels need to work if they want to survive but more importantly it shows the possible paths available to artists – big and small.

The saddest part for me is that iTunes doesn’t really offer a great alternative for artists, financially speaking, but with that amount of marketing clout it’s a devil that has homage has to be paid to.

There’s nothing particularly new in either pieces of information but Byrne’s is an honest and clear state of play for musicians everywhere.
