This time next week, Sony BMG will take its first tentative steps into a world without DRM for digital music downloads. Tentative in that the company is only offering Platinum MusicPasses for sales of individual albums. Users then go to Sony’s own website to download that album’s music.

It’s an interesting experiment, especially if the company can collect some user data for more direct marketing efforts. The user journey will be the thing though as it runs contrary to the instant gratification that almost all other services are offering. Still, it’s a positive step, so here’s to next week.
