Lovely piece in The Guardian today about those bands in the 1980s who wanted to move up and beyond the mere frippery of pop. Focused around OMD and their Dazzle Ships album – rereleased now – it also name-checks ABC (dropping strings and audience with Genetic Engineering) and Dexy’s Midnight Runners with Don’t Stand Me Down, which is a brilliant record in my opinion but mishandled and confused marketing did for that one.

Still, like David Bowie has proved, you can come back from a dodgy musical mis-step – Tonight etc. And ABC, OMD and many others from the 1980s are touring to great acclaim
