Napster is still alive and kicking despite a very public retreat from the UK market last year and has signed a distribution deal with mobile provider O2 to offer tracks at 99p, less for bulk buys.

On paper, looks great – Napster’s digital catalogue, O2’s music pedigree and distribution until you get to the point where mobile downloads are AAC and PC downloads are WMV – whaaa!

User considerations are obviously not on the list of deal priorities. I mean if I buy a download for my phone, I can’t sideload to my PC and perhaps my iPod and vice versa? That’s just plain stupid.
