Elbow‘s excellent album The Seldom Seen Kid has won the poll of polls conducted by HMV for album of the year 2008. It’s definitely my album of the year and converted me to Elbow. I’ve watched them on Glastonbury, in an Abbey Road session, downloaded an acoustic session from the wonderful KEXP in Seattle and every time I’ve gently kicked myself for not paying attention before now. That said, there is a delight in discovering something or someone at this point as there is a rich back catalogue to explore and then piece together into a lineage of development.

Hurrah for Guy Garvey and co, heartfelt, honest, inventive, emotional, funny (check out The Fix Is In) and sometimes lovely and loud. The Seldom Seen Kid is a keeper which reveals a little more with each listen.
