One of my favourite musical memories is hearing Louis Armstrong for the first time singing and thinking ‘wow, now that’s a voice’. I then trailed through the pop stuff, wondered at the duets with Ella Fitzgerald finally working my way back to his work as a trumpet player (check out his playing with the Hot Five and Hot Seven).

His role in the early days of jazz from the 1920s onwards is fascinating, his life story even more so. Dig into Satchmo, the story is inspiring.
